Optometrist: How Often Should You Visit Them?

Taking care of your eyesight is important; especially if you spend most of your time on the computer or your phone. The harsh lights from these devices can adversely affect the eyes, and hence it is essential that you take a moment to ensure that they are healthy.  There are several medical conditions which affect how your eye functions. Hence, eye check-up can also be indicative of other health conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

An optometrist is an eye specialist and you can rectify all you eye issues consulting them.. They have the tools and the skills necessary to determine the health of your eye. Usually, people who are diligent about going to the general physician may rarely ever visit the optometrist unless there are apparent signs of vision problems. However, since vision problems have a slow onset that people do not notice until it is too late; this may turn out to be a problem. Most health organizations recommend that individuals who are less than 40 years of age should go to the optometrist once every two years. Above the age of 40, it is recommended that you visit the eye doctor more often and get an extensive eye checkup to prevent the onset of glaucoma or macular degeneration.

If you already suffer from a medical condition that may affect the functioning of your eye, then you should always follow your doctor’s recommendations and schedule an appointment as often as possible. Additionally, if you already have glasses, then you should visit the eye doctor frequently so that you may be updated about the health of your vision, and track any changes immediately. Frequent visits to the doctor will you to ensure that your prescription is always current.

How Do You Know If You Need To Visit The Optometrist?

Apart from regular check-ups, there may be times when you need to go to the doctor for a consult when you see the following signs:

  • Problems in movement and eye fatigues: if you spend most of your time staring at a computer screen, then eye fatigue is not something that you should be unfamiliar with. However, if fatigue persists continuously for several days, then it may be indicative of disturbances in your vision or some condition which may be affecting the functioning of your eye. Additionally, if you feel a twinge of pain during specific movement of your eye, then an eye check-up may be necessary for you.
  • Frequent headaches: Changes I often vision manifest as headaches. Since vision changes very slowly, it is usually not noticeable as it is happening. However, a frequent and persistent headache may indicate that you need to visit the doctor or the optometrist soon.
  • Discharge: Discharge along with redness of the eye, itchiness or redness may be signs of infection. When you visit the optometrist, you can not only check the health of your vision but of your eyelids as well. If you are experiencing redness and discharge, then it may be a sign of infection as well, which requires a visit to the doctor.
  • Sensitivity to light: if you find that you are suddenly sensitive to light, then it may be a sign of something serious happening to your eye, and benefits form a consult with the doctor.

Visiting the eye doctor often is beneficial for your health. As changes in vision happen quite slowly, it is almost impossible to spot these defects as they are happening, and hence, without a frequent visit to the doctor or the Optometrist, you may not be aware of your need to take care of your eyes.
