How Heating and Cooling System Works?

Working Principle of Heating and Cooling Systems

All climate-control systems have three essential components: a source of cool and warm air, means of offering the air to the room either by cooling or heating, and a control used to monitor the system. The sources of warm air, like the furnace, and cool air, like air conditioner, in a home generally use the same distribution and monitor systems. If your home has central air conditioning, cool air apparently flows through the same channel, which heat does not and is controlled by the same thermostat.

Both the heating and air conditioning perform on the principle that heat always changes from warm object to a cooler one, just as water flows from a higher to a lower level. Heaters and boilers keep heat into the air to make your house warm; air conditioners eliminate heat to make your house cooler.

All the heating and cooling system burn fuel. Air conditioners apply electricity. Most house heating systems use gas or fuel; other devices use electricity. Earlier devices used the heat formed by heating water that in turn heated the air in the house. When you turn on the air conditioning, the electric energy cools the gas in the coil to its liquid form. Hot air in your house is cooled by getting in contact with the cooling oil, and this cooled air is passed to the rooms of your house through channels and pipes or in the case of room air conditioners-instantly from the system itself.

Once the air is heated or cooled at the heat/cold source, it should be supplied to the different rooms of your house. This can be efficient with the forced-air, radiant devices or gravity which is described below.

Forced Air Systems

A forced-air system supplies the heat formed by the heater or the cooling effect created by a central air conditioner through an electrically energized fan, known as the blower that pushes the wire through a device of metal pipes to the rooms in your house. As the heated air from the furnace passes into the rooms, cold air return to the system, down to the other set of channels, known as the air return system, to the furnace to be heated. This system is flexible.

Gravity System

The gravity system is formed on the principle that warm air rises and cold air drop. Gravity systems, therefore, cannot be applied to get cool air from an air conditioner. In the gravity system, the furnace is situated close or below the floor. The heated air rises and passes through a channel to the registers in the floor throughout the home. If the furnace is situated on the main floor of the home, the heat registers are generally positioned large on the walls as the registers should always be larger than the furnace.

Radiant Systems

Radiant Systems operate by heating the walls, ceilings or floors of the rooms or, more commonly, by heating radiators in the rooms. These objects then heat the air in the room. Some devices use electric heating panels to form heat that is radiated into rooms.

If your heating system is “newer” but more than a number of years old, you must think about having it repaired on an annual basis to keep it functioning at maximum efficiency. Getting an annual inspection can help you in staying away from repair costs.
