Choosing The Right Air-Conditioning System For Your Home

In countries where summers are really intense and it is very hot and humid, air-conditioners are a boon. Air-conditioning systems can bring down the room temperature and humidity by a considerable extent and make the occupants feel comfortable indoors. Thus, over the years this efficient system of cooling has gained so much popularity. Today, there are a large number of air-conditioning options available and as a consumer one should evaluate his or her requirement and pick the one that best suits the need. Cooling efficiency, power consumption, and many such other factors depend on the type of air-conditioning system.

What are the different types of air-conditioners?

Air-conditioners primarily fall into three categories –

  • Room air-conditioners (Wall mountable and Window)
  • Central air-conditioning systems
  • Portable air-conditioners (Free Standing)

Within the above-mentioned three main categories, there are several sub-types. For instance, room air-conditioners can be further categorized into split air conditioners and window air-conditioners. The main difference between these two is that a split air-conditioner is generally wall-mounted. Fixing a split air-conditioner does not require cutting a part of the wall. It can be installed in rooms where there’s no window. On the other hand, as the name suggests, window air-conditioners can only be installed on windows or by cutting a part into the wall with the actual cooling machine facing outside.

  • Central air-conditioning systems

Central air-conditioning systems on the other hand are a little more elaborate. A duct unit, which is the central air conditioner, is mostly installed on the roof. Air is then distributed across all the rooms through plastic pipes and ducts installed in the walls or ceilings. The temperature can be controlled from the rooms using remote control or the main control panel.

  • Portable air-conditioners:

Portable air-conditioners are free-standing air cooling units that can be easily moved from one room to another. Although in some cases these kinds of air-conditioners may require temporary outdoor ducting, these are mostly quite convenient and easy to install. However, the cooling capacity of these air-conditioners in some case may be a little less than the other two types.

So how do you decide what kind of air-conditioning systems your house needs?

Here are a few pointers that can help you take a call –

The main deciding factor is the size of your home. Whether it is an apartment or a bungalow and how big is the area. If it is a bungalow, you need to decide if all rooms including common corridors, kitchen and patio need to be cooled. If yes, then choose central air-conditioning system is your best option, especially if the bungalow is equipped with a central air-duct system and there is ample space to mount the outdoor unit. However, the cost of central air conditioning is greater than that of room air conditioners.

Again, for smaller spaces, room air conditioners offer an effective, low-cost solution. Room air-conditioners can instantly cool smaller spaces and can be installed in only the rooms that you wish to cool. The installation effort for room air-conditioners is also minimum.

On the other hand, if you are renting a home or an apartment and will be moving to a different place in the near future, portable air-conditioners are a more feasible option. The installation cost is negligible as compared to a central air-conditioning system or even room-air conditioners. However, even a room air conditioner can re-installed in your next home.

With the above-mentioned pointers, it should be easy for you to decide which type of air-conditioning system is best for your home. Also, it is wise to do a little research before choosing the brand of air-conditioners.
