Top Methods to Handle Blocked Drains

No matter how much you hate it; there is no denying that a blocked drain in fact is really a menace. It leads to clogging and overflowing of water, has a stench smell and the worst thing is that you sit around waiting for your plumber. But, actually the problem of drain blockage can also be handled by you. It is not going to be a piece of cake, but with a little patience and effort, you have the option of cleaning or rather unclogging the drain all by yourself. The first step here is to check for the clogging area. Once you locate the cause of the clog or blockage, you can move to these DIY methods mentioned below to clear a blocked drain.

Use a Bent Wire Hanger

One of the simplest and yet more effective methods for clearing a drain that has been clogged because of a big piece of meat, fruit or any other ingredient like a tissue paper lot, is through the bent wire. All you have to do is take a simple coat hanger and then use all your strength to straighten out the same. Then using your hands, bend one of the ends to create a small hook like shape. Using this hook, you have to get rid of the drain cover and start picking out items that clog your drain. Keep garbage bag handy for putting the nasty stuff and do remember to use gloves.

Hot Water

Once you implement the above method for cleaning the nasty blocked drain, run some hot water freely through the pipe. This is suggested to get rid of all the other clogged parts of the drain or any other kind of sediments that stick to the pipes and cause another clogging session later. Doing so is highly recommended for people who constantly pour grease down the drain along with other sticky substances.

Baking Soda and Vinegar Solution

An easy home method or blocked drain solution is to mix 1/3 cup of baking soda along with equal amounts of white vinegar in a cup. This leads to a fizz reaction, which is very much similar to your normal drain cleaner. This is the only natural way of cleaning the drain which works out more compared to the other methods. This should be done at least once in 2 weeks or once a month to ensure that the drain is cleaned. Pour the mixture over the drain pipe and let it stay overnight.

Dry and Wet Vacuum

Here you have to alternate the dry and wet vacuum to unclog the drains. For this method, set your vacuum to liquid state and then make sure that the vent is covered in order to avoid a mess. Use the tightest possible seal over the drain and you can also use an old plunger here. Turn on the vacuum at high. Then repeat with dry settings, it usually works for a minor blocked drain.

Caustic or Industrial Soda

This requires a lot more caution that your home made mix of vinegar and baking soda. Wear gloves for protection and ensure that your eyes are covered. Caustic soda is also referred to as Sodium Hydroxide, which is a risky substance that can cause burns. You have to pour about ¾ gallon of water in a bucket along with 3 big cups of this caustic soda.

Now use an old spoon to stir because you have to throw away the same later on. Pour down the drain and leave overnight to get rid of your blocked drain.
